    UniFi installation Las Vegas guide

UniFi installation Las Vegas guide: A UniFi system replaces the usual mix of router, Wi-Fi extenders and camera app with one managed platform: a gateway, a PoE switch, wired access points and — optionally — UniFi Protect cameras, all administered from a single controller interface.

UniFi installation Las Vegas guide: what a unifi system is made of

UniFi is Ubiquiti's line of managed networking equipment. The pieces are modular, but a typical residential deployment uses four of them.

A gateway or console that routes traffic, handles firewall rules and runs the controller software
A PoE switch that powers access points and cameras over their Ethernet runs
Wi-Fi access points, usually ceiling- or wall-mounted, each fed by its own cable
Optionally UniFi Protect cameras, recording locally to the console's drive

    Why the Controller Matters

The reason people move to UniFi is rarely raw speed — it is visibility and control. One interface shows every connected device, which access point it is on, what it is using and how the network is behaving over time. Changes like adding a guest network, isolating cameras onto their own segment or setting up VLANs are made once and apply across the whole system.

It also makes remote support practical. Configuration changes, firmware updates and diagnostics can be handled without a site visit, which is why the platform is common in small offices and vacation rentals as well as homes.

Access Point Placement and Wired Backhaul

Wired backhaul connects access points to the switch without wireless relay overhead. Actual client throughput still depends on the link, radio conditions, equipment and configuration. Plan each cable route alongside the desired coverage.

Placement follows the building, not the floor plan's centre. Stucco over wire lath, block walls and low-E window coatings all attenuate signal heavily, which is why a single unit rarely covers a long Las Vegas single-story layout. Splitting the space into zones — living areas, bedroom wing, garage or casita, patio and pool — and placing an access point per zone is the usual approach, with outdoor-rated units where coverage extends beyond the walls.

Ceiling mounting generally outperforms a unit sitting on a shelf, because the signal radiates down and out rather than into furniture.

    Adding UniFi Protect Cameras

UniFi Network manages networking equipment, while UniFi Protect manages compatible cameras. Supported consoles can host both applications, with local recording on suitable storage. There is no per-camera subscription for local recording, which is a common reason people choose the platform over cloud camera brands.

Because the cameras and the network are managed together, keeping cameras on their own VLAN — able to reach the recorder but not the rest of the network — is straightforward rather than a special project.

Sizing matters: the console needs enough drive capacity for the retention you want at your camera count and resolution, and the switch needs enough total PoE budget for the cameras and the access points combined.

    What an Installation Involves

The work is mostly cabling and planning. Access point and camera locations are chosen on a walkthrough, cable routes are planned, runs are pulled and terminated back to a panel or rack, and the switch and console are mounted, powered and configured.

Configuration then covers the network design itself: SSIDs, a guest network, segmentation for cameras and smart home devices, channel and band settings, and labelling so the system is understandable later. Coverage is re-tested in each area before handover.

Existing equipment is worth assessing before replacing. Plenty of networks underperform because of placement and configuration rather than hardware, and an existing switch or cabling often carries into a UniFi deployment unchanged.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is UniFi worth it for a home?

It is a good fit for larger homes, properties with cameras, or anyone who wants one managed system instead of a router plus separate camera and extender apps. For a small apartment with a single access point, a standard router is usually sufficient.

Do UniFi access points need to be wired?

They support wireless uplink, but they are designed for wired backhaul and perform substantially better with it. Running Ethernet to each access point is the single biggest factor in how well the system works.

Does UniFi Protect require a subscription?

Local recording to the console's drive does not require a per-camera subscription. Remote viewing through the app is included; optional cloud services are separate.

Can UniFi replace my ISP's router?

A compatible UniFi gateway can take over routing and firewall functions. Wi-Fi may require separate access points. Check the ISP handoff requirements and supported operating modes before changing existing equipment.

How many access points does a house need?

It depends on layout and construction rather than square footage. Long single-story floor plans, masonry walls and outdoor areas each push the count up. Zoning the property and planning a cable to each zone is the reliable way to decide.
